I had a bit of fun with this one! In general, it’s a nice bluesy ska album with strong reggae roots. Its first song is… the beginning does sort of go on a little long, so I probably only listened to that twice all week, but the second song, Night Train to Moscow, is just a lot of fun, and it’s the song that brought me to the album, so I thought it was nice to skip to. This week’s top pick is going to be When Will I Be Loved, for instrumentation (Sweet harmonica, really nice guitar tone, brass, and some tasteful organ hidden in there.) and familiarity as an Everly Brothers tune. It’s still so blues that I won’t consider it a ska cover, one of my favorite cliches, but that doesn’t stop it being a good time. Honorable mentions include the album’s title track, a grand time with a lovely bassline and something approaching enough organ. If you’re looking for a jazzy ska romp with sax and brass, Step Up will getcha there- it’s also going on my organ playlist.
Solidifying One More Bullet as a ska-y blues album is the sendoff track, Blues Bros. Outro… (Their ellipses). I think the name alone gets its point across, but it’s worth a listen.
Next week’s album: City to City, Gerry Rafferty
